NASCAR on FOX sticking with only double-box ads during green flag racing

FOX Sports did something different this past Sunday with its coverage of the 67th running of the Daytona 500.

While yes, there were commercials, FOX went with only double-box ads during green flag racing. As a result, viewers never missed a single lap of green flag racing. That is set to continue throughout the 2025 season for FOX broadcasts, per Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal. FOX will feature full-screen ads during stage breaks and under caution.

“@FoxSports plans to continue only using double-box ads during green flag racing for @FoxTV’s NASCAR Cup races,” Stern wrote on X. “@FS1 events will have some full-screen ads but it’s expected to still have a significant increase in the number of double-box ad breaks vs. ’24.”

New NASCAR on FOX change met with praise from fans

It’s a welcome change for NASCAR fans, who have in the past been critical of FOX‘s presentation of the sport. But when it comes to this slight change, fans are all-in.

“The 500 had a much better green flag experience for sure,” one fan wrote. “I don’t recall any full screen ads during green so that’s nice. If it was full screen I’d either flip the channel or bathroom/food break. At least this keeps me seeing @allyracing ad and the green flag action.”

Another fan added they would like to see the double-box ads spread out more across the broadcast. This year’s Daytona 500 featured just 18 minutes of full-screen breaks and 35 minutes of side-by-side breaks, per Jonathan Fjeld of The Racing Experts.

“I commend them for moving in the right direction and understand commercial money is needed but the side by side every 7-10 minutes is exhausting,” the fan tweeted. “Hope they can find some sort of compromise but it was frustrating to see so many adds during the 500.”

FOX Sports has 13 races left on its part of the 2025 TV schedule, the final broadcast being the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro. The network will then make way for Prime Video and TNT for the next 10 races, before NBC and USA Network finish with the last 14 races of the season.
