NASCAR teams still unsatisfied with current charter proposal
The clock keeps ticking and NASCAR and the Cup Series teams have still not agreed to a new charter agreement for 2025 and beyond. With negotiations already going much further into the year than expected, this is another hiccup.
The NASCAR charter negotiations are ongoing. Teams are looking for more of the revenue to hit their pockets, increased sponsorship deals among the teams and NASCAR itself, and other improvements.
Currently, the charter agreement that was signed in 2016 will last through the end of the season. Once 2025 rolls around, if a new agreement hasn’t been signed, then it gets into tricky territory around whether or not races even happen.
Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal spoke with four people in the know about the charter negotiations. Things don’t seem to be lining up quite yet.
“Teams and NASCAR are said to have largely agreed to the split of the money for the next TV deals, which appears to signal that at least some degree of progress has been made in recent months,” Stern wrote. “But the sides have been unable to bridge disagreements in other areas. Teams in NASCAR are independent contractors and don’t own equity in NASCAR Holdings, but the sides have ideally been hoping to sign a deal that would result in them working more closely together than ever in the next term, such as jointly selling sponsorship.”
Despite positive momentum, it feels like we are still not close to having a new agreement. Will NASCAR and the teams come to a decision on the charters? Teams want more revenue and revenue streams. NASCAR wants to hold onto what it has built.
Teams and NASCAR will eventually have to come together. An agreement will have to be in place before the 2025 Daytona 500.

NASCAR working on charter agreement
Fans don’t hear a lot about the NASCAR charter negotiations. There is little said from the governing body itself and officials in the sport. So, what we do hear is from media sources and occasionally Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski.
Right now, the feeling is that prolonged negotiations are hurting charter prices. Stern pointed that out in his report as well.
“The lack of a deal has led to concerns about charter values and whether it’s discouraging outside investment into the sport. NASCAR is declining to comment on charter negotiations and there was no immediate comment from the Race Team Alliance today.”
The NASCAR charter agreement is up in the air. Things are going to continue to go on for now. However, if we get to the end of the season without a new agreement, the alarm bells will be ringing.
