NASCAR Truck Series driver Conner Jones gets into fight at Florence Motor Speedway
Last night during the South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway, Conner Jones found himself in another incident on the track. This time, Jones ended up wrecking and throwing hands with Mason Diaz.
Conner Jones is starting to build up a reputation. At just 18 years old, he has already faced a one-race suspension for his actions on track in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
Even in the CARS Tour and late model races, Jones has had incidents. He gets in over his head, gets upset, makes hasty moves. During the South Carolina 400, Diaz and Jones traded paint. Then they were both caught up in the big one.
That’s when fists started flying. Conner Jones and Mason Diaz were scrapping it out on the ground. When both got up, Jones still had his helmet on his head.
Here is one look at the aftermath of the wreck and the fight via Taylor Kitchen of Above the Yellow Line.
Speaking with Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut and Short Track Scene, Diaz was beside himself. He couldn’t believe that another incident with Jones was popping up.
“What more does the kid need? I mean, suspended from NASCAR, the list goes on and on and on. There’s not a single person – every single person is probably happy he got into a fight with someone today because everyone wants to do it to him.
“I hate it for him, I don’t want to see anyone fight, or anyone be talked bad about. I want to see everyone do well. Um, I don’t know. I don’t know what that kid needs to fix it.”

Conner Jones needs someone to talk to him
Short track racing is rough and tumble. However, it feels like Conner Jones has gone another step further. Over and over again, we have heard about and seen incidents where he gets upset and takes in out on someone on the track.
Even in that video above, you can see Jones in his helmet having to be restrained. He kept running and going after Diaz long after it was clear the scuffle was over.
You have to say it, because these are professional race car drivers at the end of the day, but it’s childish. We have examples of young drivers at all levels of racing, who race above their maturity level. Conner Jones, many times, acts exactly how you would expect an 18-year-old to react behind the wheel of a race car.
Motorsports are dangerous. Make no mistake about it. Acting out on the track is no way to make friends, and is an even better way to hurt someone or yourself. Will Jones ever learn or will it take a very hard lesson to get through to him?
