There is still an effort for NASCAR to get an international Cup Series race. NASCAR will host representatives from various countries in Daytona. Those representatives are interested in bringing the sport to their respective nations. First, they will take in The Great American Race.

NASCAR plans to pitch an international event. While putting together the 2024 schedule, there was an effort to get a race in Montreal. However, the Canadian city and track could not reach a deal with America’s top racing series.

A report from Abraham Madkour of Sports Business Journal makes it sound like this is a serious meeting. Madkour writes that “NASCAR will host a number of officials in Daytona” who have an interest in hosting a race in the future.

There are already talks about The Clash potentially going to Mexico. The Montreal idea is still out there with NASCAR hoping to at least go across the northern border for an international event.

A new TV deal for NASCAR probably makes it easier to sell an international race. However, there is still the charter agreement that has to be decided on. A few irons in the fire for Steve Phelps and NASCAR executives.

If NASCAR does go international, it will be interesting to see where they go. With a presence in Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and Europe – there are multiple avenues to take. Those are all areas that have established NASCAR products right now.

Where would you like to see the Cup Series go?

NASCAR isn’t the only brand going international

Now, there are many differences in Formula One and NASCAR. However, one thing that F1 has going for it is the fact that it is a global sport. There are fans of NASCAR all around the world, of course, but not on the same level as F1.

If NASCAR wants to compete in the modern motorsports world, in terms of market and audience share, they have to meet fans where they are at. The Clash at the Coliseum, Chicago Street Course, and other events are designed to do just that.

However, that isn’t the only American racing series going international. IndyCar is still working out details on a race in Argentina. Juncos Hollinger Racing boss Ricardo Juncos is from Argentina, as is his driver Agustin Canapino. IndyCar raced in the country way back in the early 1970s.

Now they, and the race fans in Argentina are hoping to get a deal done to send the IndyCar show to South America.

NASCAR going international isn’t a new thing. In 1988 the Cup Series went to Australia to race at Calder Park Thunderdome in Melbourne. Neil Bonnett won the pole and the 313-mile race. Could we see another international event soon?
