Week 1 of the college football season saw some movement on the national scale, with multiple high-profile matchups taking place. Some bettered themselves to make the College Football Playoff while others will have an uphill climb the rest of the way.

Ultimately, the goal for everyone is to win the national championship, scheduled to be in Atlanta this upcoming season. FanDuel has updated the favorites to win the College Football Playoff after Week 1.

The Big Ten and SEC still dominate the top 10, with two outsiders barging in. Both of them had huge nonconference wins on Saturday and emerged as serious threats to eventually make the CFP.

Georgia Bulldogs +270

Georgia looked dominant in the second half of Saturday’s game against Clemson after a low-scoring first two quarters. The defense was its normal self and Carson Beck eventually unlocked the floodgates against a talented Clemson bunch.

Until the SEC Championship game, Georgia was the national title favorite all of last season. Until proven otherwise, they will remain at the top of the odds.

Plenty of excitement came from Columbus in what was a routine afternoon against Akron. Nothing about the season’s outlook has changed for head coach Ryan Day.

Two more nonconference games remain before Ohio State gets into Big Ten action. Smooth sailing ahead for the Buckeyes, at least for a couple more weeks.

Texas Longhorns +700

Texas’ first-ever game as a member of the SEC went to plan and more, blowing Colorado State out. A lively crowd at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium was on hand to watch the Longhorns as well.

Next up is the Michigan Wolverines, making for one of Week 2’s top matchups. Texas could have completely different odds this time next week, depending on the result.

Oregon Ducks +700

For quite a while, Oregon was in a close contest against Idaho. The FCS foe was able to play with the Ducks for around 3.75 quarters before Dan Lanning’s team pulled away. Not exactly the performance he imagined.

Even so, it’s only one game and Oregon still projects to be one of college football’s top teams. The Big Ten race for a bye in the College Football Playoff will be a great one.

Alabama Crimson Tide +1100

No Nick Saban, no problem — at least through one week. Alabama took care of business against Western Kentucky, earning a shutout win at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the first time since Nov. 19, 2022, against Austin Peay.

Kalen DeBoer is attempting to keep the Alabama standard at the same level. National championships in Tuscaloosa are expected and the odds peg them as one of the favorites.

Many feel like Lane Kiffin has his best-ever team at Ole Miss. Upgrades at the line of scrimmage have folks in Oxford feeling good about their chances in 2024.

While not too much was learned when facing Furman, being 1-0 is never a negative. Ole Miss will continue to battle to reach heights the program never has.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish +1700

Notre Dame played in a defensive battle against Texas A&M in College Station, walking away with a victory. Now, the Irish can take advantage of a lighter schedule and push toward double-digit wins to get into the CFP.

From there, Marcus Freeman will likely take his chances against any programs across the country. Notre Dame will have plenty of time to improve on offense, especially with a veteran quarterback in Riley Leonard.

Penn State Nittany Lions +1800

No team would have benefitted more from a 12-team College Football Playoff in the four-team era than Penn State. James Franklin‘s squad was always just on the outside looking in after falling behind in the Big Ten East.

That no longer applies in 2024 and Penn State hopes to capitalize. As a result, they will squarely be in the national championship race with the other big boys of college football.

Miami Hurricanes +2200

Arguably no bigger statement was made than what Miami did at Florida. The Hurricanes needed a program-defining win under Mario Cristobal and certainly got it in an absolute beatdown.

Other results around the ACC have certainly helped too, making Miami’s the conference’s clear favorite. Which, of course, would result in a bye in the College Football Playoff.

LSU Tigers +3500

Of the teams ranked inside the top 10 of the odds, LSU is the only one to have a loss on their record after one week. The Tigers fell to USC in Las Vegas, a result head coach Brian Kelly was quite frustrated with.

Thankfully for them, there is plenty of time to bounce back. A few high-profile games remain on the schedule for LSU to make statements in moving forward.
