College Football Playoff Predictions ESPN Projects 12 Team Field (1)
On3

The College Football Playoff is set to undergo a major change this season as the number of teams competing for a national championship goes from four to 12. We’re now a month through the regular season and an early picture of the contenders is starting to form.

Many of the preseason favorites still remain at the top after FanDuel adjusted its odds following this past week of games. Ohio State, which had the best odds before the season began, is still No. 1 with +340 odds to win the national title after it beat Marshall in Week 4 to improve to 3-0.

Under the new College Football Playoff format, the five highest-ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids. After that, the next seven highest-ranked teams will complete the field.

Georgia (+400) comes in with the second-best odds after the Buckeyes as the top seven teams are all either from the SEC or Big Ten. It will be interesting to see how much that changes throughout conference play, but many expect those leagues to lead the way with the most Playoff bids.

You can view the rest of the odds to win the 2024 College Football Playoff, according to FanDuel, below.

Ohio State Buckeyes (+340)

Ohio State has showed no reason why it should be doubted through the first three games, albeit against lesser competition. The Buckeyes have breezed past a trio of Group of 5 opponents to the tune of an average margin of victory of 45.7 points while ranking top five in both scoring offense and total offense.

Running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson form perhaps the best backfield duo in all of college football, while freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith looks like a star as well. The Buckeyes open Big Ten play this week, where they look like the early frontrunner to win the conference and earn a Playoff spot.

Georgia Bulldogs (+400)

After winning back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, Georgia failed to make the College Football Playoff in 2023 after losing to Alabama in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs are hungry to make it back and will have a chance to get their revenge against the Crimson Tide in a Week 5 matchup.

Georgia survived a close call in Week 3 against Kentucky to escape with a 13-12 win before getting a bye this past week. It will surely come out with a lot to prove after totaling just 262 total yards against the Wildcats.

Texas Longhorns (+480)

After making the College Football Playoff for the first time last season, Texas looks in great position to make another trip in 2024. The Longhorns have already taken out defending national champion Michigan and open up SEC play this week against Mississippi State.

Whether or not starting quarterback Quinn Ewers will be available for that game as he recovers from an abdominal injury is the story right now. Arch Manning starting in his place Saturday, throwing for 258 yards and two touchdowns to two interceptions in a 51-3 win against Louisiana-Monroe.

Alabama Crimson Tide (+750)

Playing in its first season under coach Kalen DeBoer, Alabama is off to a 3-0 start. The Crimson Tide have scored at least 40 points in every game thus far and won handily each time.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe ranks fourth in the country with 14 total touchdowns despite having played one less game than the three players ranked ahead of him and many of those behind him. He’ll face a major test this weekend against Georgia, the No. 1 passing defense in the country.

Oregon Ducks (+1000)

The Ducks had a couple of close calls in their first two games, but won convincingly this past weekend by a score of 49-14 against Oregon State. Transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been incredibly efficient thus far, leading the country with a 84% completion rate.

He has tossed for two touchdowns in each game while also rushing in a pair on the season and has yet to throw an interception. Oregon looks to challenge Ohio State for the Big Ten Championship, but could still make it in the CFP even if it doesn’t claim the conference crown.

Ole Miss Rebels (+1100)

Ole Miss has rolled past its opponents in the first four games for an average margin of victory of 49.5 points. The Rebels currently lead the country in both scoring offense and total offense behind quarterback Jaxson Dart.

He has thrown for an FBS-leading 1,554 yards in addition to 15 total touchdowns, a number that puts him tied for second. The Rebels have never made the College Football Playoff, but that looks likely to change this year with how they’ve played early on.

Tennessee Volunteers (+1200)

Tennessee walked out of Norman on Saturday with a 25-15 victory against Oklahoma in a game where it looked dominant defensively. The Vols forced three turnovers, recorded three sacks and also held OU to only 25 yards rushing as it led 22-3 entering the final quarter.

Redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava has been solid in his first season as the full-time starting quarterback with 892 yards passing and seven touchdowns to two interceptions. It’s a tough SEC slate with both Georgia and Alabama still ahead, but the Vols look the part to compete with the best of the best.

Miami Hurricanes (+1600)

Miami comes in as the first team from a conference other than the Big Ten or SEC to be listed in the odds to win the College Football Playoff. The Hurricanes have score 50 points in three of their first four games as quarterback Cam Ward leads the way for this high-octane offense.

The Washington State transfer leads the country with 14 passing touchdowns and ranks second with 1,439 yards. Miami opens ACC play this week and looks like the clear favorite to win the conference and punch its first-ever ticket to the CFP.

Penn State Nittany Lions (+2000)

Penn State finished among the top 12 teams in the final CFP rankings each of the past two seasons. With the field expanding, this feels like the year that the Nittany Lions finally get in.

Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have combined to help them rank as the nation’s No. 10 rushing offense with 255.0 ground yards per game. That along with a top 25 defense should make Penn State a tough out in the Big Ten race.

Clemson Tigers (+4000)

Many were ready to count Clemson out after a 34-3 loss to Georgia in the opening week. However, the Tigers showed they’re not ready to go out quietly last week as they throttled NC State by a score of 59-35.

It was even more dominant than that final numbers suggest as Clemson led 59-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Cade Klubnik has thrown for eight touchdowns over the past two games after a rough showing in Week 1 and will look to continue to play well Saturday against Stanford.
