Fans stop to take photos with the College Football National Championship trophy at Meijer in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024. The trophy is going on a tour for fans to see presented by Dr. Pepper.

Miami just played host to a College Football Playoff classic, with Notre Dame taking down Penn State at the Orange Bowl. Two programs desperately trying to break through, the Fighting Irish are just one win away from being on top of the sport once again. It’s one they will remember for a long, long time in South Bend.

As much fun as celebrating the win would be, Marcus Freeman surely will immediately switch focus to the upcoming national championship game. DraftKings has put out hypothetical lines on the Jan. 20 matchup, giving a sneak preview of how oddsmakers view Notre Dame vs. Ohio State or Texas.

No matter who emerges victorious on Friday night, they will be viewed as the favorite. An underdog mentality from Notre Dame will surely come rocking into Mercedes-Benz Stadium in just over a week’s time.

Of course, things can change as the Ohio State-Texas game still needs to take place. Plus, the line can change over the week as bets are placed across the country. But for now, Friday’s winner, whoever it may be, is considered the favorite.

Notre Dame waiting on national championship opponent

Playing on Thursday means Notre Dame can sit back, relax, and watch the Cotton Bowl unfold without any worries. All eyes in the College Football Playoff world are now on Ohio State and Texas, hoping to be the second team to book a trip to Atlanta.

“Just like to say first of all, it’s an honor to represent the SEC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “This game has been notorious for great games and great teams over the years. Obviously, this being a semifinal game of the College Football Playoff, it’s definitely an honor to be a part of this.”

Ohio State’s Ryan Day opened up his initial Cotton Bowl press conference in a similar way, saying “Honored to be a part of the Cotton Bowl again. Just a tremendous bowl. And I’ve said this many times that the Cotton Bowl does a great job in their hospitality. Everybody there takes a lot of pride in the bowl, and it’s a great setting.”
