NBA contender signs DeMarcus Cousins for rest of 2021-2022 season
A former Kentucky and NBA All-Star has found a new team this season, as DeMarcus Cousins joins a team making a meaningful playoff push. The Denver Nuggets are signing the veteran center for the rest of the 2022 NBA season after his third 10-day contract with the team expired last weekend.
DeMarcus Cousins receives new NBA contract
“The Denver Nuggets are planning to sign center DeMarcus Cousins to a rest-of-season contract in the coming days,” stated The Athletic’s Shams Charania. “Cousins’ final 10-day expired over the weekend. He’s averaged 6.1 points and 6.3 rebounds with Denver, where he’s reunited with Michael Malone.”
Cousins first joined the Nuggets at the end of January on a 10-day contract, and has had his contract extended twice over the past month. In eight games with the Nuggets, Cousins has averaged 6.1 points and played 13.1 minutes. The Nuggets will look to the veteran to help support their second unit and provide relief for star Nikola Jokic.
“Bro, I don’t even know how I’m here,” Cousins said last season after playing with the Los Angeles Clippers in the postseason. “I really don’t. I just take s— one day at a time. I work every day. That’s really all I can do. I really don’t know how I’m here. Sometimes it really doesn’t seem like a reality to me because I know I am not supposed to be here. My body been through hell. I work my ass off. But no [expletive] really gave me a chance. But I just have to take advantage of it. I still can hoop my ass off.”

Since then, Cousins has played for two more teams in the Milwaukee Bucks and now the Nuggets. Once a potential max-contract player after seven years with the Sacramento Kings, Cousins has become a journeyman in the NBA, spending one season with his last four teams. The Nuggets are his seventh NBA stop of his career after being drafted fifth overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.
In his single season with Kentucky, Cousins averaged 15.1 points and 9.8 rebounds as a freshman alongside future NBA star and No. 1 draft pick John Wall.
