Ohio State star Neal Shipley has once again won low amateur honors at a major, finishing at 6-over-par in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Shipley finished just ahead of other amateurs that made the cut in Luke Clanton (8-over par) and Gunnar Broin (16-over par). That gave Shipley low amateur honors at both the US Open and The Masters.

In doing so, he became the first player to earn low amateur honors at both tournaments since Viktor Hovland did it in 2019.

Neal Shipley joined some elite company on Sunday

Some other notable golfers who have accomplished the same feat in the past: Matt Kuchar (1998), Phil Mickelson (1991), Jack Nicklaus (1960), and Ken Venturi (1956).

Once the dust had settled on Sunday evening, Neal Shipley had finished in a tie for 26th place. The 23-year-old was paired with fellow amateur Luke Clanton in his final round, two of the three amateurs to make cut at Pinehurst No. 2.

Shipley fired a 2-over 72 in his final round on Sunday. He finished with a 70-73-71-72 in his first ever start at the U.S. Open. Shipley qualified for the U.S. Open after finishing runner-up in the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills, Colorado, just outside of Denver.

Other notable scores from the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2

Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open on Sunday by one stroke, thanks to some once-in-a-lifetime scrambling, and some mind-blowingly bad putting down the stretch from Rory McIlroy. He missed two putts inside of four feet on the last three holes, squandering his best chance to win a major in a decade.

2024 PGA Champion Xander Schauffele shot 2-under par on Sunday to finish 1-under par for the tournament. He finished in a tie for seventh place with Russell Henley. For Schauffele, it marked his eighth straight top-15 finish at the U.S. Open. The only players with a longer streak since 1920 are Jack Nicklaus (12, 1971-1982), Ben Hogan (12, 1940-1956), Bobby Jones (11, 1920-1930) and Sam Snead (9, 1947-1955).

Schauffele’s consistency in the majors has been nothing short of spectacular, placing him among some of the greatest golfers of all-time. It’s his 10th straight Top 20 finish in a major, with Tiger Woods being the only player with a longer streak in the last 30 years. Jack Nicklaus holds the record with 33 straight Top 20s in majors from 1970 to 1978.

Brooks Koepka finished 6-over par in a tie for 26th place. Russell Henley had an excellent showing this weekend, finishing at 1-under par in a tie for seventh place. Tony Finau finished in third place at 4-under par, tying with former UCLA star Patrick Cantlay. To round out the top five, France’s Matthieu Pavon carded a 3-under par, finishing in fifth place, all by himself.
