Nets trade DeAndre Jordan to Pistons in exchange for pair of players

The Brooklyn Nets have reached an agreement to trade DeAndre Jordan to the Detroit Pistons, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Nets also sent the Pistons their own 2022 and 2027 second-round picks, a 2024 second-rounder via Washington and a 2025 second via Golden State.

Brooklyn received Jahlil Okafor and Sekou Doumbouya in return.

The deal allows the Nets to save $47 million in salary. Detroit will look to buy out the remainder of Jordan’s contract.

The Nets lost to the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks in round two of the playoffs this past season. Both James Harden and Kyrie Irving battled injuries throughout the postseason as the team struggled to reach its potential.

Jordan averaged 7.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a little more than 21 minutes per game last year. A 14-year NBA veteran, the former Texas A&M Aggies center was taken with a second round pick in 2008. DeAndre Jordan spent his first 10 years with the Los Angeles Clippers, but is now joining his fifth team in the past six seasons with the trade.

Doumbouya is the former No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 draft. In two seasons with Detroit, he averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in just under 18 minutes per game.

Okafor has largely underperformed since being take third overall in 2015. The center had a brief stint with Brooklyn during the 2017-18 season. He played just 26 games for the Nets that year. He signed with the New Orleans Pelicans that offseason.

The Detroit Pistons after coming off a 20-52 season. They have missed the playoffs in 10 of the past 12 years. Rookie guard Cade Cunningham is expected to be the new face of the franchise. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy was selected first overall this offseason.

Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this past season. He helped Oklahoma State to earn a four-seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys eventually lost to 12-seed Oregon State in the second round.
