This past weekend, Michelle Manziel, the mother of former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, was arrested on a DWI charge in the family’s hometown of Kerrville, Texas, according to TMZ. Now, new details have emerged regarding the incident.

Michelle Manziel refused to take a Breathalyzer and subsequently failed a field sobriety test before she was charged, per TMZ. The altercation with the law took place after officers noticed she was driving with a faulty tail light, and she showed signs of intoxication during the ensuing traffic stop.

TMZ added that Michelle Manziel’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and she had an unsteady balance. Additionally, there was a strong odor of booze emanating from her breath, according to their sources. She was later released from Kerrville police custody after posting a $7,500 bond, and her attorney told TMZ she has no comment on the matter.

In the time since, her son has not publicly commented on the matter, as well. The artist formerly known as “Johnny Football” was a multi-sport star in high school, graduated from Kerrville’s Tivy High in 2011 as the city’s most accomplished and celebrated athlete after being named a Parade All-American and the Texas Mr. Football following a record-breaking 2010 season in which he combined for 77 total touchdowns on the season, including 30 rushing scores.

Then, Johnny Manziel would go onto become a star at Texas A&M, splashing onto the national scene as a redshirt freshman in 2012, which included knocking off top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa en route to becoming the first-ever freshman to win the Heisman Trophy later that year. Manziel was also the first freshman and the fifth player in NCAA history to eclipse 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season, winning SEC Freshman of the Year and the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback in the country.

Moreover, Johnny Manziel infamously battled his own issues with substance abuse, including entering himself into a treatment program during the 2015 offseason prior to his second season in the NFL. Later that season, the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback was demoted to third string after a viral video showed him partying in November 2015. Following a string of other off-field incidents, including several run-ins with police, the Browns cut their former 2014 first-round draft pick in mid-March 2016.

It was a tumultuous time for Johnny Manziel, who would later admit to using Oxycontin and cocaine while battling depression in the months following his Browns departure — reportedly losing 40 pounds in a nine-month span — according to the Netflix documentary, UNTOLD: Johnny Football. In that same documentary, Manziel revealed his drug use was “a constant, daily thing” at the time, according to Yahoo!, including spending nearly $5 million on a bender after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Johnny Manziel was later suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, though he never returned to the NFL.
