New England Patriots linebacker Chase Winovich is set to return from injured reserve, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. Winovich left the team’s Week 6 contest against Dallas with a hamstring injury and has not played since.

Winovich was a major part of the Patriots defense in 2020, recording 48 total tackles to go along with six sacks. The hamstring injury hampered his ability to make an impact this year, as he has only seven tackles.

A third round pick out of Michigan in 2019, Winovich made his return to practice Thursday. Many may expect him to make an immediate impact, though it may take some time to get him warmed up. Even prior to the injury, he played on only 18.8% of New England’s defensive snaps despite seeing 58% last year.

In addition to Winovich, the Patriots employ Ja’Whaun Bentley, Dont’a Hightower, Matt Judon, Kyle Van Noy, Josh Uche, Jamie Collins, Brandon King, Jahlani Tavai and rookie Ronnie Perkins listed at the linebacker position. Winovich has also seen time on the edge, playing behind Deatrich Wise Jr.

The Patriots (5-4) currently sit a half-game back from Buffalo (5-3) in the AFC East standings. Following the departure of Tom Brady last year, New England finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. They selected quarterback Mac Jones, the current starter, 15th overall in the 2021 draft.

The former Alabama star led the Cimson Tide to an undefeated season and national title in 2020. He has put together a solid rookie campaign, so far with 2,135 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 68% of his passes.

The Patriots have a critical matchup against Cleveland upcoming in Week 10. Kickoff for that one is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. How much will we see New England employ the newly activated Chase Winovich? Playing to retake the division, the Patriots are sure to approach every game with equal importance.
