New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo updates quarterback Jacoby Brissett's shoulder injury
New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo provided an update on the shoulder injury to quarterback Jacoby Brissett following Sunday’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders. The coach said that Brissett was healthy enough to keep playing but the team held him out to be safe.
“He would’ve been able to continue,” Mayo said according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. “…He said he was good.”
Brissett suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game and did not return. He was just 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards before he exited the game.
Drake Maye stepped in his place to go 13-of-20 passing for 126 yards and a touchdown. It was a big statement for the rookie out of North Carolina, who is hoping to beat out Brissett for the starting job.

There’s little doubt that the Patriots view Maye as their future after drafting him third overall this offseason. He brings plenty of potential too after throwing for 8,018 yards and 63 touchdowns to 16 interceptions in his college career.
However, there is always risk to starting a rookie right away and New England could want to take some more time to develop Maye rather than throwing him into the fire. Now that Brissett is healthy according to Mayo, they’ll have the option to do so.

ESPN NFL insider predicts Drake Maye sits behind Jacoby Brissett for NFL season
A scenario exists where Brissett gets the keys to the offense to start the season before Maye eventually takes over, and that’s what Dan Graziano of ESPN is banking on. Graziano wrote in his Monday column he believes Brissett will start the season under center as Maye continues to get up to speed.
“Here’s another story with an ending you already know,” Graziano wrote. “Maye was the third overall pick in this year’s draft and will be the starter eventually. But he’s still 21 years old and was viewed by many in the pre-draft process as a raw prospect who’d need time to develop. He has made some breathtaking throws in the offseason that remind you why he was picked where he was picked, but New England is a rebuilding team that believes it can give Maye as much time as he needs.
“And that’s why the Patriots have Brissett, a reliable veteran who has been everything they hoped he would be so far both as a player and as a mentor for the rookie. Brissett threw three touchdown passes in three games last season with the Commanders and turned in a solid 62 QBR as the Browns’ starter in 2022.”
