New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett leaves game with shoulder injury
New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett left their preseason game on Sunday evening against the Washington Commanders early. He was knocked out of the game in the first half, after KJ Henry came completely clean off the edge and drilled him to the ground on a tackle. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Twitter that New England officials said Brissett has a right shoulder injury.
NBC’s Melissa Stark added to that information late in the second quarter, saying that the Patriots quarterback has been ruled as “officially questionable” to return to the game. Since it’s the preseason, there’s very little chance we see Brissett back in the game.
This will be an important injury to monitor, because of the Patriots’ decision of who to play at starting quarterback. If Brissett misses time, then it likely paves the way for rookie quarterback Drake Maye to step into the fire. The Patriots offensive line has struggled mightily in the preseason and that’ll be one of their biggest concerns moving forward. While Maye has been flashing his talent with plenty of impressive throws in the preseason, he may not be able to survive if his offensive line can’t block.

In the first half on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, the Patriots offensive line allowed one sack (the one that led to the Brissett injury), four illegal formation penalties (one negated a touchdown), and someone even dislodged a quarterback’s shoe. That’s got to be terrifying for whoever will be under center for New England this fall.

Brissett has been a more than capable player in the league over the years. While his play has flown under the radar a bit, he’s had some pretty good seasons with a number of different franchises. In 2022 with Cleveland, Brissett threw for 2,608 yards, while tossing in 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. In 2019 with the Colts, he threw for 2,942 yards, while tossing in 18 touchdowns with six interceptions. In 2017 with the Colts, he managed to throw for over 3,000 yards despite being sacked 52 times, which is no easy feat.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Patriots quarterback battle plays out throughout the season.
