Report: New England Patriots sign Davon Godchaux to two-year, $20 million extension
The New England Patriots have decided to keep former LSU standout Davon Godchaux in Foxborough for two more years. The veteran defensive lineman got paid in a big way on Wednesday, landing a two-year contract extension worth $20.8 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
He was entering the final year of his two-year, $16.5 million extension he signed with the club in free agency last offseason. The 6-foot-3, 311-pounder is now locked up through the 2024 season. The extension for Godchaux is expected to free up some cap space for the Patriots franchise.
Last year for the Patriots, he racked up 65 tackles, five quarterback hits, and one forced fumble in just 17 games. The former Tiger standout saw action in 59 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.
Godchaux suited up for the LSU Tigers from 2014 to 2016. In 37 games, he finished his career with 145 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 12.0 sacks.

His best season came as a junior in 2016, when he racked up 62 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one pass defended, and two fumble recoveries. In 2015, the defensive tackle also played a critical role in why the Tigers’ run defense allowed only 122.9 yards per game, ranking third in the SEC. Godchaux posted good numbers that year, too, racking up 41 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six sacks. He entered the 2017 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 178 overall selection.
The Louisiana native spent from 2017-2020 with the Dolphins, before joining the Patriots in 2021.
Coming out of Plaquemine High School (Plaquemine, La.), Godchaux was rated as the No. 15 defensive lineman in the country for the 2014 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus Rankings. The standout defensive tackle was named a U.S. Army All-American. Godchaux was named first team Class 4A all-state his junior year after racking up 60 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks for Plaquemine.
