New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas isn’t expected to play again this season, head coach Dennis Allen told reporters today.

Thomas appeared in the first three games of the season for the Saint before missing the past five weeks. He missed the entirety of the 2021 season.

Now, a season-ending surgery for what Allen described as a dislocated toe is going to keep Thomas on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

Thomas had 16 receptions for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the three games he played.

Without him, the Saints will continue to lean on leading pass catchers Chris Olave — a rookie wideout from Ohio State, the same alma mater as Thomas — and running back Alvin Kamara. The duo has combined for 70 receptions and more than 800 yards at this point, plus two touchdowns each.

Thomas was finishing rehabbing an ankle injury at the beginning of the season

He underwent serious ankle surgery in July of 2021 due to an injury he suffered in the 2020 season. Recent videos have shown him looking pretty sharp at camp, but he’s still got a bit to go in his rehab process as he still clearly rounds off his routes when cutting. But he’s not that far away from being 100 percent. Saints head coach Dennis Allen provided an update on his star receiver on Wednesday evening via John Hendrix–the New Orleans beat reporter for Sports Illustrated.

“I think he’s looked outstanding. Obviously, we’re still in a progression with him. He got some 7-on-7 today. We plan on continuing to progress that. Hopefully soon we’ll get on to some team work and keep rolling,” Allen said.

Now, it’ll be at least another off season until the Saints can get Thomas back into the fold on offense.
