The New Orleans Saints made a surprising decision on Tuesday. They’re trading defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Gardner-Johnson is heading to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. It’s a huge boost for the Eagles, who land a starting caliber back to help anchor their defense.

As part of the deal, the Eagles are sending a 2023 fifth-round NFL Draft pick and the worse of the team’s 2024 sixth-round picks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. New Orleans is also including a 2025 seventh-round selection as part of the package to Philadelphia.

Gardner-Johnson, a former Florida star, appeared in 12 games for New Orleans last year, including 11 starts. He had three interceptions to go with 46 tackles and 2.0 sacks to lead the Saints defense, and he was eligible for an extension. According to Rapoport and Pelissero, talks broke down, which led to his trade.

The Saints drafted Gardner-Johnson in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft after a standout career at Florida. With the Gators, he had 71 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and four interceptions — including two pick-sixes — as a junior before declaring for the draft.

Carolina Panthers acquire wide receiver Laviska Shenault in trade with Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are trading former Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Laviska Shenault to the Carolina Panthers. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the two sides agreed to a trade Monday afternoon.

The Jaguars selected Laviska Shenault in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, the former Buffalo struggled to carve out significant playing time in Jacksonville. It is more than understandable the struggles Shenault had in Jacksonville.

In his two years there, he has played with a total of four different starting quarterbacks and three different head coaches. That includes Darrell Bevell, who took over for Urban Meyer after he was let go less than a season into his tenure last season. Over his first two years in Jacksonville, Shenault caught 121 passes for 1,219 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed 132 yards in 29 attempts.

The Panthers are taking a flyer out on the third-year player in hopes of adding some more firepower to their offense. Shenault joins a talented wide receiver room in Carolina that also includes D.J Moore, Robbie Anderson, and the Panthers’ second-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, Terrance Marshall.
