Report: New York Giants bench starting QB Daniel Jones
The New York Giants officially benched starting quarterback Daniel Jones out of the bye week, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Sources: The Giants are benching QB Daniel Jones, officially moving on from their starter,” he tweeted. “Out of the bye week, with the team 2-8, Jones now heads to the bench in what the team has said would be a football decision.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Jones will be replaced by backup QB Tommy DeVito, who registered six starts last season, going 3-3. Drew Lock is the other QB on the roster.
Jones has been much aligned throughout his career in New York and the struggles finally caught up to him.
In 10 games this season, he has 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 63.3% completion percentage to go along with a 2-8 record.
Jones was drafted with the No. 6 overall pick in 2019 out of Duke and presumed to be the franchise quarterback following Eli Manning.
Jones is 24-44-1 in his career as a starting quarterback for the Giants. Overall, he has 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 64.1% completion percentage.
In 2022, Jones led New York to a 9-6-1 and a Wild Card playoff spot. He threw 15 touchdowns to just five picks, while throwing for a career high 3,205 yards.

The Giants upset the Minnesota Vikings in the first round on the road before falling to eventual NFC Champion and division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the Divisional Round.
However, the Giants could not build and Jones went 1-5 in starts before getting injured last season. The neck injury occurred after he signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension.
More controversy brewed with Jones due to his struggles and contract. Going into 2024, the Giants had to decide whether to pay Saquon Barkley or let him walk in free agency.
Barkley ended up signing with the Philadelphia Eagles and is in the middle of a career year. Although the Giants drafted LSU wideout Malik Nabers to assist Jones with fresh new weapons.
But through 10 games, Jones’ struggles continued and the development did not happen. His future with the Giants is certainly murky as he could’ve played his final game in New York.
