New York Giants owner John Mara comments on Deshaun Watson rumors
A new era is upon the New York Giants organization, with Joe Schoen being named the general manager on Wednesday. Of the topics that needed to be addressed right away was the status of the quarterback position for the Giants.
Schoen quickly said the franchise was going to build around former first-round pick Daniel Jones and what he does best. Owner John Mara said the franchise has done “done everything possible to screw this kid up” and wants to give him another shot.
With that comes questions about possibly trading for Deshaun Watson. The current Houston Texan has been a hot name on the market over the past year. However, Mara quickly shut down the idea of Watson coming to New York.
“We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson,” Mara said. “There are so many reasons why we wouldn’t do that. Cap-wise, we couldn’t afford it but more importantly, with the allegations that are out there right now, that’s just not the right fit for us.”
Watson did not play this season for the Houston Texans after a few off-the-field issues plagued their relationship.
First, and most importantly, the quarterback is still caught in the middle of sexual assault allegations. The NFL has not fully made a ruling on Watson’s status going forward, whether or not he is in Houston or not.

Next, Watson was not happy with how the Texans handled their head coach search last offseason. David Culley ended up getting the nod without approval from the quarterback before getting fired after one season.
Head coach Brian Flores wants to team up with Deshaun Watson
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has been in contact with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson about joining up for the 2022 NFL season. Flores was recently released from the Dolphins after three seasons as coach, and during his final season, Flores aggressively pursued potential trade options to bring Watson to the Dolphins.
“Developing story: Deshaun Watson and Brian Flores have been in constant communication trying to navigate a scenario where they go to the same team,” stated veteran NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. “Watson ‘trusts and likes’ Flores and has been adamant internally that he’d like to play for him next season.”
Schultz speculated the Giants as a possible destination for the duo to meet up. While Flores is not out of the equation to take over as the head coach, Mara’s statements on Wednesday make it clear — Watson will not be a New York Giant.
