New York Jets formally parting ways with QB Aaron Rodgers

Four days after a report emerged from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer that the New York Jets would be moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the organization itself confirmed the news.
The Jets dropped a tweet on Thursday afternoon announcing the decision.
“We have informed Aaron Rodgers that we will be moving in a different direction at quarterback,” the Jets wrote.
The Jets also released a statement from Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey on Rodgers.
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” the statement read. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
It remains to be seen whether the team will cut him or trade him, but it appears the two parties’ split is now imminent.
The Packers traded Rodgers to the Jets in 2023, but Rodgers missed nearly all of the 2023 season due to a torn Achilles. He returned in 2024 and guided the Jets to a 5-12 record, throwing for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Of course, Rodgers has put together a Hall of Fame career, finishing up his 20th NFL season following the 2024 campaign. Over that time, the veteran quarterback has thrown for over 62,000 yards with 503 touchdowns, winning four MVP awards and a Super Bowl title with the Green Bay Packers, as well.
Brett Favre wants Aaron Rodgers to keep playing
After the 2024 season finale, Rodgers reflected on his two years with the Jets.
“I would have a big hole inside me that only this, these two years, could have filled,” Rodgers said, per the Jets’ official website. “So when I say these have been the best two years of my life, I don’t just mean those relationships off the field. There’s been a lot of really special things that have happened. But if I hadn’t come to New York, these relationships that are really important to me, many of which are going to last for a long, long time, never would have happened, and I would have really missed out on meeting some really special people.”
When Rodgers began his career as an NFL QB, he was the backup for Hall of Famer Brett Favre. While speaking with TMZ Sports, Favre said Rodgers should return to football in 2025.
“If you want to play, if there’s anything in your gut that’s telling you, man, I think I could go one more year then I would say do it,” Favre told TMZ, via Pro Football Talk. “Because you can’t go back. Once you leave, that’s it. You move on. If there’s any little inkling in him that he wants to play and prove that he can still do it at a high level I would say do it.”
