New York Jets owner Woody Johnson releases statement after firing HC Robert Saleh
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson released a statement after the firing of Robert Saleh. The change sent shockwaves around the NFL.
Saleh went 20-36 in three-plus years as head coach of the Jets. New York lost to the Minnesota Vikings 23-17 Sunday in London to fall to 2-3 in 2024.
Johnson’s statement can be read below.
“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Johnson’s statement began. “I thanked for him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.
“Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”

“I think that they believe that they have a really good team,” Schefter said. “I think that they think this team, especially in that division, can compete to win the division, and it wasn’t performing the way that everybody expected. If we watch this team, everybody would admit every Jet fan, it looked off. They lost at home to Denver. They lost to Minnesota. What’s odd is, in this day and age, in the National Football League, there are peaks and valleys to every team season.
“Everybody goes through them, but with the pressure in New York, I just feel like they felt like this is a team that should be performing better, winning more often, and Woody Johnson didn’t want to squander what could potentially be the last year of Aaron Rodgers career.”
The Jets had a chance to win it in the end, but Minnesota picked off Rodgers for the third time to deny New York a third win.
“You’re always going to find silver linings after a loss, we are not ready to talk about them right now, but I do appreciate the way that our guys continued to battle,” Saleh said postgame. “They fought throughout and gave ourselves a chance. We were right there with a chance to go score a touchdown at the end of the game to win it and unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
