The Steelers reworked their quarterback depth chart. They used the draft to address their offensive line needs. And they signed a fierce inside linebacker.

But did Pittsburgh do enough in the off season to elevate their receivers? It’s still an unanswered question with the start of training camp fewer than three weeks away.

CBS Sports published a list of needs for each AFC team as training camp season opens later this month. Receiver popped up as a Steelers need.

CBS Sports wrote: “Prior to the Diontae Johnson trade, the conversation would have centered around the cornerback and offensive tackle positions. Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. and cornerback Donte Jackson give them options, but either starting would bring frustrations over the course of the season. The franchise then drafted Troy Fautanu to fill a starting offensive tackle spot.

“With Johnson gone, Pittsburgh has little outside of George Pickens. The hope is that Calvin Austin III takes on a bigger role and rookie Roman Wilson’s acclimation to the NFL is fast and smooth.”

Yes, back in March, the Steelers did send Johnson, their most experienced receiver, to the Panthers. Pittsburgh packaged Johnson and a seventh-round draft pick to Carolina in return for Jackson and a sixth-rounder. The Steelers also released Allen Robinson, who was then signed by the Giants.

So there are question marks for the position as the Steelers try to figure out the best option for the second receiver opposite Pickens.

There is the dream scenario, where Pittsburgh, somehow, trades for Brandon Aiyuk from the 49ers. The San Fran star is at a negotiating impasse, so there are always rumors he wants to go elsewhere if he doesn’t receive more money in this hot receiver market. But most don’t believe the 49ers will deal him.

The Steelers did add four new receivers. The veteran signees are Van JeffersonQuez WatkinsScott Miller. They used a third-round draft pick on former Michigan star Roman Wilson. One of these four will need to step up to be the No. 2 guy. Or the number two option could be Calvin Austin, the team’s fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft.

The Steelers also hired Arthur Smith to be the offensive coordinator. Smith likes play action, a steady running game and calling plays to his tight ends. But to be successful in the NFL, a team needs at least two viable options at receiver. If Pittsburgh can’t get that player, opposing defenses can bracket Pickens and take him out of the Steelers offense.
