Josh Allen pointed a finger at a Bengals defender last Sunday as he scored a touchdown. And that brief taunt bruised the checking account of the Bills quarterback.
Specifically, the NFL fined Allen $10,927 for the taunt, however brief it might have been. It probably wasn’t a surprise, either, considering that officials also flagged Allen 15 yards for the play. It’s part of the NFL’s accountability program. The league announces fines each week for poor play that might or might not have been flagged by game officials. Call it a gigantic replay.
The NFL appeared to make an example out of Josh Allen. The only other player from the game who was fined was Bengals offensive guard Cordell Volson. The league stuck Volson with a $5,746 fine for a blindside block categorized as unnecessary roughness. So Allen’s check was almost twice as high as Volson’s and the finger taunt didn’t physically hurt anyone.
Allen looked like he was pointing to Bengals safety Nick Scott. The play appeared to be a called QB run as Allen darted to his right and turned the corner for the end zone. He pump faked Scott, a move that cleared a path for the TD.

But Josh Allen didn’t score enough. Joe Burrow and the Bengals won the key AFC matchup, 24-18.
Josh Allen had plenty of company on NFL’s weekly fine list
The NFL gets very specific with its fines. The league announces them each Saturday and identifies each player, the amount of the fine, what the violation was and when it happened. The league said it reviewed 2,148 plays. It found 17 plays that broke some sort of rule. Josh Allen was the only quarterback on the list, but he had plenty of company.
