NFL Free Agency: Taylor Rapp agrees to three-year contract with Buffalo Bills

Taylor Rapp is staying in Buffalo. He’s set to sign a three-year contract with the Bills ahead of NFL free agency, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Rapp’s new contract will be worth up to $14.5 million, Schefter said, as he stays with the Bills after one season. He served as a key part of the secondary, totaling 50 tackles and a fumble recovery in 16 appearances – including four starts.

The Los Angeles Rams drafted Rapp in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he earned a starting role. He then signed a one-year deal with Buffalo prior to the 2023 campaign, but after some notable departures on Wednesday, is staying put.

The Bills released multiple players on defense as they worked to get under the salary cap. The most notable departure was Jordan Poyer, who was a first team All-Pro in 2021 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. He was one of five players Buffalo released Wednesday, including cornerback Tre’Davious White and center Mitch Morse, to create $25.96 million in salary cap space.

Bills reportedly agree to terms with Mitch Trubisky

Taylor Rapp isn’t the only new contract for the Bills, though. They’re also planning to bring back quarterback Mitch Trubisky, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported. He spent the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after serving as Josh Allen’s backup in Buffalo in 2021. Pittsburgh granted him his release, giving him a head start on free agency ahead of the NFL’s official start next week.

Rumors swirled throughout social media on Wednesday that talks between Trubisky and the Bills were ramping up. Hours later, Garafolo reports the move as being a “done deal.”

Trubisky has amassed over 12,000 career passing yards and has thrown 72 touchdowns over a seven-year career. He started at quarterback for four seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected No. 2 overall in 2017. He was named to the 2018 Pro Bowl during his time in Chicago.

He’s also a 1,000-yard career rusher, having put together 1,173 yards and 13 additional touchdowns since joining the league. A massive chunk of that total is thanks to him compiling 421 rushing yards during his Pro Bowl season. 

Now, he will serve as a capable backup for Allen once again in an attempt to help elevate the quarterback room in Buffalo. He’ll be hoping to help ready Allen for a potential Super Bowl run in 2025 after being thwarted in the playoffs once again this past postseason.
