NFL insider: Bears RB Khalil Herbert expected to miss 'multiple weeks' with ankle injury
The Chicago Bears (1-4) are expected to be without starting running back Khalil Herbert for multiple weeks after he suffered an ankle injury in the 40-20 Week 5 victory over the Washington Commanders (2-3) Thursday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Chicago signed fourth-year tailback Darrynton Evans off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad to replace Herbert. Evans spent the 2022 season with the Bears, rushing for 64 yards on 14 carries in six games.
Herbert, who broke out last season with 731 rushing yards as part of a backfield tandem with David Montgomery, leads the Bears in rushing through five games. The 25-year-old has rushed for 272 yards on 5.3 yards per carry. He’s added 10 receptions for 83 yards and a score.
Herbert injured his ankle attempting to haul in a pass from Justin Fields with just under 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. His right leg bent awkwardly underneath him, though fortunately, he didn’t suffer a major injury as a result. Herbert ran for 76 yards on 10 carries before exiting the game. The former Virginia Tech star indicated he was fine after the game.

Joining Herbert on the injury list are rookie running back Roschon Johnson and veteran tailback Travis Homer. Johnson, the fourth-round pick out of Texas, suffered a concussion Thursday. Homer, meanwhile, went down with a hamstring injury. With all three sidelined and D’Onta Foreman inactive, Khari Blasingame received the bulk of the work to close out the game. Blasingame rushed for 26 yards on eight carries.
Foreman figures to get another chance to impress the Bears’ coaching staff, as he’s been a healthy scratch for four consecutive weeks. Foreman is coming off a career season with the Carolina Panthers. He rushed for 914 yards and five scores on 4.5 yards per carry. The Bears inked Foreman to a one-year, $3 million deal this offseason.
