NFL insider explains why Will Anderson is the 'safer option' for Houston Texans at No. 2
Many believe the Houston Texans should select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and call it a day. Matt Miller of ESPN doesn’t subscribe to that theory.
The NFL Draft analyst predicted that former Alabama Crimson Tide star defender Will Anderson will be the pick at second overall in his latest 2023 NFL Mock Draft. After the surprising revelation, Miller did a hit on SportsCenter to explain his reasoning, believing Anderson has been the best player in college football over the last two seasons, and is the safest option.
“Mock drafts are based off of what we’re hearing from people around the league, whether that be scouts, coaches, general managers, and all the wisdom right now says that the Houston Texans would pass on a quarterback, and go with a safer option such as Will Anderson, a player I’ve compared to Von Miller. Someone who was the best player in college football the last two years,” explained Miller. “Not just best defender, but best player in college football the last two years.”
Continuing, Miller said he wouldn’t make that move himself, but he believes that’s what is going to happen. As for the Texans quarterback situation, perhaps a move involving their second pick at No. 12 overall could be where they fill the spot.

“So if the Texans pass on a quarterback, that’s not the move I would make, but it is a move that I think a lot of people in the NFL right now believe will happen. We have to remember, the Texans pick again at No. 12 overall, so they might think that they can play the board wisely at 12 and get someone such as Will Levis from Kentucky or Anthony Richardson from Florida, even if that means trading up just a little bit to get in front of a team like the Tennessee Titans at No. 11 overall,” added Miller. “But when the clock strikes and No. 2 is on the board Thursday night, we’re all going to be waiting to see what happens.
“There is no guarantee right now with what Houston will do, and it’s really, truly a fascinating situation, with a new head coach coming in and you’ve got an incumbent general manager, so a lot of things can happen here.”
The Texans would certainly be taking a risk, but it’s one that may pay off in a big way. Time will tell what they plan to do, but Matt Miller makes some interesting points.
