NFL insider reveals major update on Matthew Stafford's future with Los Angeles Rams

When the Los Angeles Rams lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs last month, it was reported that Matthew Stafford was “uncertain” of his future with the organization.
A Super Bowl-winning quarterback with LA, it appears that the two parties have a mutual interest in returning Stafford in 2025 with a new contract. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler explained where the situation stands as the NFL offseason gets underway.
“The people I’ve talked to with the Rams believe that they want to keep Matthew Stafford,” Fowler revealed during SportsCenter on Saturday morning. “They want to work out a new contract. … He’s due $27 million in cash this year. He is underpaid and is still one of the top five to seven quarterbacks in the league, so they have to work something out.
“But the belief league-wide is that the Rams will have a threshold and a limit as to how far they’ll go with that money. He’s in his late 30s, some durability questions, so they’re going to have to try to find a sweet spot. If they can’t, then teams are interested.”
Fowler name-dropped the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders as teams who are known to be in the search for a quarterback. Teams around the league are “monitoring” to see if the Rams and Stafford can come together and reach a deal.
He reiterated that, as of now, the Rams do feel like Stafford will be back for the 2025 season, “but something has to get done with the contract.”

Former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum joined Fowler for the segment, revealing a ballpark of what the Rams should expect to pay if they want to return Stafford’s services this upcoming season.
“You look at Kirk Cousins at roughly $45 million a year — I think it has to be north of that,” Tannenbaum said. “If I’m the Rams, I do try to hold the line and say I’m not going to 60 million at the top end of the market, as Jeremy alluded to, because of age and durability, but he played really good. … So, I do try to find that sweet spot at roughly around $50 million a year.
“Both sides could claim victory. Stafford gets a raise and the Rams hold the line. With all those good, young defensive players, if I’m the Rams — run it back.”
The Rams finished 10-7 last season, winning the NFC West under Stafford’s guide. His numbers are declining statistically, but even after the loss to the Eagles in the playoffs, he said he’s still got some football left in him. Whether that’s in LA or not remains to be seen.
