NFL insider reveals what Jameis Winston signing means for Giants pursuit of Aaron Rodgers

Jameis Winston and the New York Giants are finalizing a two-year deal worth $8 million, according to Jordan Schultz. The deal is potentially worth $16 million with incentives. One might think that would shut down the Giants search for another quarterback. But, Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported otherwise on Friday. They will still pursue Aaron Rodgers, according to the report.
“This does not change the Giants pursuit of Aaron Rodgers or alter any other possible QB routes. Just getting a veteran QB under contract in a QB room that only had Tommy DeVito coming into the day,” Garafolo tweeted.
Pittsburgh Steelers also showing interest in Aaron Rodgers
On Friday, Aaron Rodgers visited the Pittsburgh Steelers’ training facility for about six hours, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Rodgers is currently a free agent and has been in discussion with the Steelers this offseason.
Per Schefter, it was a “positive visit” and the two sides will stay in touch. However, Rodgers and the Steelers did not come to an agreement on Friday. After all, they aren’t the only ones interested in signing Rodgers this offseason.

Rodgers, 41, is the top remaining signal-caller on the market following his official release from the New York Jets last Wednesday. At least three teams have expressed interest in the four-time MVP: The Steelers, New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. The latter have reportedly taken themselves out of the running, leaving Rodgers with limited options if he wants to return for a 21st season.
Rodgers spent the last two years with the New York Jets after coming over via trade from the Green Bay Packers, but his first season in New York ended on his first drive of the 2023 season due to an Achilles injury. In 2024, he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, along with 11 interceptions – marking two straight full seasons with at least 10 picks.
But after acquiring receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, the Steelers signaled they believe they’re in win-now mode. While not as effective as he used to be, Rodgers quietly played well down the stretch last season and could be viewed as an upgrade over Russell Wilson and Justin Fields — the Steelers’ previous quarterback tandem.
