NFL insider: Two teams emerge to watch for Daniel Jones once he clears waivers
After it was revealed on Friday that the New York Giants were planning to release Daniel Jones, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler delivered some insight into which teams could be interested in bringing the quarterback onto their roster for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.
Jones will clear waivers on Monday and then be eligible to play for a team of his choosing. It’s been theorized he could end up in a myriad of situations, from a starting gig to a high-level backup for a playoff team. According to Fowler, two teams make the most sense for Jones — the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars, but don’t discount the San Francisco 49ers, as well.
“I’ve been texting with people around the league, and I think that six to eight teams will at least have cursory interest in Daniel Jones once he clears waivers Monday at 4:00 pm,” Fowler predicted. “Obvious need is the Las Vegas Raiders. They’ve had quarterback problems all year. There is a quarterback coach there, Frederick Walker, who worked specifically with Jones at Duke, so they have a relationship. Could be something to watch there.
“Jacksonville, if they shut down Trevor Lawrence for the year with his shoulder issue, although I think he wants to play. But if they do, he’s an upgrade over Mac Jones. And the 49ers are a situation to monitor. Brock Purdy (is) out this week, could be out next week. Maybe they need an upgrade too. Kyle Shanahan has always loved mobile quarterbacks. That’s what Daniel Jones is.”

In 10 games this season, Jones has amassed 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 63.3% completion percentage to go along with a 2-8 record as the Giants’ starter. Still, he’s shown some promise, and the record certainly isn’t squarely his fault.
Time will tell where Daniel Jones’ next shot will come. It’s evident he’ll get one in 2024, as he looks to prove himself to the NFL for the first time with a new franchise.
