Thursday night, Josh Allen won the NFL MVP award. It was shaping up to be a two-man race between the Buffalo Bills QB and Lamar Jackson – and the voting results showed just how close it was.

Allen received 383 points, including 27 first-place votes. That narrowly beat out Jackson’s 362 points and 23 first-place votes. The Baltimore Ravens QB had the most second-place votes at 26.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley – the NFL Offensive Player of the Year – finished third in the MVP voting with 120 points while Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was fourth with 82 points. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff rounded out the finalists in fifth place at 47 points.

Allen was a big reason the Bills reached the AFC Championship for the second time in five seasons. He finished the 2024 regular season with 3,371 passing yards, 531 rushing yards, 41 offensive touchdowns, a 101.4 passer rating and only six interceptions. He earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors four different times and became the first player in NFL history to record at least 25 touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in a season.

Jackson, meanwhile, is no stranger to the MVP award, winning it last year and in 2019. During the 2024 season, Jackson set career highs with 4,172 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, a 119.6 quarterback rating and 316 completions. He also led the league in rushing yards by a quarterback with 915 yards on the ground and became the first player in NFL history with at least 4,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards. Last month, the Pro Football Writers of America named Jackson the 2024 MVP.

Josh Allen gives heartfelt speech after winning MVP

As he held his NFL MVP award, Allen didn’t want to take all the credit. He also made sure to shout out his teammates and the Bills organization for the support along the way.

“I know this is an individual award and it says Most Valuable Player on it, but I think it’s derived from team success,” Allen said in his speech. “And I love my team. D-Dawk [Dion Dawkins], thank you for presenting. I really appreciate it. We’ve got such a great locker room in Buffalo. And it takes everybody.

“From the equipment staff to the training room to the strength staff, to Slick Rick in the mail room to the cafeteria upstairs. It truly takes everybody to have team success, and I’m so fortunate to be part of a great organization.”

Allen also acknowledged his parents, who were in the crowd. He wrapped things up by shouting out his fiancee, Hailee Steinfeld.

“I’d like to thank Joel and LaVonne, my parents, who – in my 20-plus years of playing football, going down to Pop Warner – I’ll bet they’ve missed probably 15 games in their entire life,” Allen said. “They are so dedicated to supporting me and my favorite teammates, who are my sister, my brother and my little sister – Nikala, Jason and Makenna. Thank you guys for all the support, all the time, money, energy wasted growing up from going from meet to game to practice every day. I love you guys. I know you take a lot of pride in this, as well.

“Last but not least, my fiancee, Hailee. You’ve been my rock, you are my best friend. I would not be standing on this stage if it wasn’t for you.”
