NFL spokesman shares new update on Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s status after offseason arrests
An NFL spokesman just gave a new update on Rashee Rice‘s status ahead of the start of the regular season. Brian McCarthy recently said on a conference call that the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver isn’t expected to be placed on the Commissioner Exempt list despite his arrest in April.
“We don’t anticipate he’ll be placed on commissioner’s exemption unless there is a material change in the case,” McCarthy said, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Rapoport also mentioned that Rice remains eligible to play at the start of the season because the legal situation is not yet settled.
Rice is facing eight felony charges after being involved in a high-speed hit-and-run crash in Dallas. The 24-year-old was driving a Lamborghini Urus and was racing a driver who was in a Chevrolet Corvette. Four other vehicles were damaged in the wreck after the Lamborghini struck a retaining wall. Video showed five men disembarking the Urus and the Corvette and leaving the scene.
On April 11, Rice turned himself in and was briefly jailed before being released later that day on bail. Before the arrest, Rice released a statement about the incident.

Rashee Rice plays a key role in the Chiefs’ offense
“Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s accident,” Rice posted. “I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident.”
Rice participated in all the offseason activities and training camp. Heading into the 2024 season, the former SMU star is listed as a starting wide receiver with Hollywood Brown. Rice was selected in the second round of the 2023 draft and caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 regular season games during his rookie season. He also helped the Chiefs win their second consecutive Super Bowl.
“He’s super talented,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told reporters during Super Bowl week in February, per NFL.com. “So much so that now we’re designing plays to get him the ball and see what he can do with it. When the personnel department can get a guy like that, give him to the coaches and then watch him develop and grow quickly, that’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
