Nick Sirianni breaks down how much the Eagles' offense has changed for Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles have been on the doorstep of breaking through in the three years head coach Nick Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts have been together. Now, they know it’s time to find a way in a new offensive scheme.

For Hurts, the 2024 Eagles will have their third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. That means learning another new offense. However, as Sirianni recently explained, there are always overlapping concepts to go with the new ones in a changing offense.

“I think some of it is there’s new concepts,” Nick Sirianni said. “There’s new ways to think about the play concepts of what we’ve done in the past, he might have a new responsibility within that play. So, that’s new to him. Even though we might be running a similar play, his progression may be a little different. The way a route detail is taught as far as, ‘Hey, this has to happen on this play,’ that may be a little different.”

In 2022, Jalen Hurts threw for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also rushed for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns. That was in a season where Philadelphia went to the Super Bowl under offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who left to become the Indianapolis Colts head coach and was replaced by Brian Johnson.

For the most part, those numbers then went up in 2023 with Hurts throwing for 3,858 yards and 23 touchdowns with 605 yards on the ground and 15 touchdowns. However, Hurts’ interceptions also went up from six to 15 and the Eagles struggled down the stretch.

Now, Nick Sirianni has replaced Brian Johnson with Kellen Moore to run the offense. Again, Jalen Hurts will need to respond by adjusting to the new system.

“So, there naturally is going to be differences in everybody’s offense. There’s similarities in everybody’s offense across the NFL. There’s differences in everybody’s offense. But I think that’s the really important thing, that his job responsibility has changed a little bit on some of those things.

But again, like I said, I think he’s doing an excellent job of adapting to new schemes, reading the old schemes a little differently, and then mastering the stuff that he’s already done so well.”

Kellen Moore previously worked as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys. He’s one of the best respected young coaches in the game today. Now, he’ll work to unlock the full potential of Jalen Hurts this upcoming season.
