North Wilkesboro Speedway is putting an end to the rumored Moonshine Cave underneath their grandstands that sent fans into a tizzy.

Earlier in March, it was revealed that a possible moonshine cave was discovered under the concrete grandstands at the track. It was discovered during a routine inspection last week after staff discovered cracks in the original concrete in Section N.

As crews began removing the seats to inspect the extent of the damage and evaluate the needs for repair, an open area of about 700 square feet was discovered underneath the aging concrete.

Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports, even added some fuel to the fire, theorizing it could’ve been used to make moonshine in the past.

“When we began renovating and restoring North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we’d often hear stories of how an old moonshine still was operated here on the property under the grandstands,” Swift said. “Well, we haven’t found find a still (yet), but we’ve found a small cave and an interior wall that would have been the perfect location to not only make illegal liquor, but to hide from the law as well. We don’t know how people would have gotten in and out, but as we uncover more, there’s no telling what we might find.”

On Tuesday, FOX’s Bob Pockrass revealed Speedway Motorsports is now sealing up the hole that many believe served as the theorized Moonshine Cave, “Speedway Motorsports is starting to use concrete to fill a 700-square-foot hole that developed underneath two sections (about 600 seats) of the North Wilkesboro Speedway grandstands,” Pockrass posted on X. “Track says plenty of big rocks and dirt underneath provide a solid ground foundation.”

Thankfully, North Wilkesboro Speedway gave us a look inside before they filled the hole. While it doesn’t exactly lend itself to the Moonshine Cave theories, it’s still a fascinating development inside the track. Check it out below.

Moving forward, North Wilkesboro Speedway is set to host NASCAR All-Star Race Week from May 14-19. Swift is making sure that the sinkhole doesn’t affect their ability to get the job done for an exciting weekend.

“Now we have a race before the race,” Swift added. “The area that’s been affected by the sinkhole is a frontstretch grandstand area with some of the best views of the track. We’ll have a lot of work to get done before NASCAR All-Star Race Week.”

Moonshine Cave or not, North Wilkesboro gave us a look behind the curtain. Theories will still run rampant, but one thing is for sure, it’ll be awesome to return to the track this May.
