Notre Dame will be well-rested for the first-round meeting. Since the program is one of three independents in the FBS, the Fighting Irish did not compete in a conference championship game, instead enjoying time to recover from a hard-fought regular season.

Notre Dame finished 11-1 in the regular season, with its sole loss coming in a wild upset against Northern Illinois in Week 2. Alas, the Fighting Irish finished the season strong, defeating Army and USC in back-to-back games.

Notre Dame’s defense is its foundation, only allowing 296.8 yards per game, the ninth-least in the country. If the Fighting Irish’s defense can show up on Dec. 21, Notre Dame will have an excellent chance of advancing to the CFP quarterfinals.

Of course, Indiana won’t make it easy. The Hoosiers also finished the regular season 11-1 but failed to reach the Big Ten Championship. Indiana’s only loss of the season was when it fell 38-15 to Ohio State in Week 13.

The Hoosiers didn’t allow the loss to linger, closing the regular season with a 66-0 shellacking of Purdue. Indiana has the No. 24 offense in the country this season, averaging 438.8 total yards per game. Now, Indiana will look to let its offense run loose against Notre Dame’s stifling defense.
