Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M is part of a jam-packed Week 1 slate of games. ESPN’s College GameDay will be in attendance for the matchup, as well, for the primetime matchup.
Notre Dame is taking on a new look this season with multiple changes on offense, including a new coordinator in Mike Denbrock. Riley Leonard is now in at quarterback and the Fighting Irish brought in multiple weapons at receiver from the transfer portal. Jeremiyah Love is also returning in the backfield after an impressive freshman season.
One of the biggest storylines for Week 1 will be Leonard going up against Elko, though. They spent the last two years at Duke before Elko left to become the head coach at Texas A&M, replacing Jimbo Fisher. They both have received plenty of questions about facing each other for the first time, and it adds to the excitement around the game.

Alabama LB announces plan to transfer
“Obviously, I’ve got so much respect for Riley,” Elko told On3’s Andy Staples in February. “He’s such a great kid and a great quarterback and a great competitor. I’d pick an awful lot of quarterbacks I’d rather have be on the other sideline for me in my opener than him. But it is what it is, and that’s the world we live in today. I think there’s a lot of mutual respect between the two of us.
“But I think he knows like I know we’re both high level competitors, too. For those three and a half hours, we won’t be rooting for each other. And then, we’ll shake hands and wish each other the best for the rest of the year.”
Texas A&M lost some key production to the transfer portal this offseason, but kept its quarterback. Conner Weigman will be back under center for the Aggies after an injury cut his 2023 season short, and he’s already generating some NFL Draft buzz ahead of his third year in College Station.
On defense, Texas A&M lost some key pieces, but made some notable additions from the portal. The biggest is former Purdue EDGE Nic Scourton, who came in as the No. 10 overall player in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings, as well as former Alabama cornerback Dezz Ricks.
