Ole Miss quarterback Spencer Sanders invited to Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp

With the 2024 NFL Draft officially over, teams have begun to find undrafted free agents to fill out the roster. And while former Ole Miss quarterback Spencer Sanders does not officially have a contract, he will have an opportunity to impress the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Sanders has been invited to rookie minicamp by the Kansas City Chiefs, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reports. While nobody is taking the job of Patrick Mahomes anytime soon, the Chiefs are still looking at options to sit behind the NFL superstar.

“Former Ole Miss and Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders is going to the #Chiefs rookie minicamp as an invitee, per his agent Jesse Foreman,” Pelissero said via X.

Sanders spent this last season with the Rebels but lost the starting quarterback competition to Jaxson Dart. Head coach Lane Kiffin did wind up getting Sanders nine appearances but a lot of the time, it was a special package.

He threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns on just 29 attempts while receiving 11 carries for 45 yards. Probably not what he was expecting during his lone season in Oxford after transferring from Oklahoma State.

One game Sanders did not play in was the Peach Bowl against Penn State. He was reportedly academically ineligible and was not able to suit up in what would have been his final ever college football game.

Sanders played high school football at Denton (TX) Ryan, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 173 overall recruit in the 2018 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Everybody knows who sits at the top of the Kansas City quarterback depth chart. Mahomes has been the face of the NFL for quite some time now, winning on an annual basis. This past playoff run might be the most impressive of them all, winning games on the road for the first time in his career.

Opportunities are there behind Mahomes, though. Carson Wentz currently occupies the backup role and his NFL journeyman career continues. Ian Book is on the roster as well and has experience as a starter in the league.

Sanders will have an uphill battle ahead of him, especially as an undrafted free agent. But the chance to impress is there in front of him, hoping to find a role in Kansas City.
