As good as the Oregon offensive attack was last season, it’s expected to be just as good this year, if not better. The Ducks went out and got former Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel as their signal-caller. He’s just one of several Ducks to land preseason All-American honors from a number of different publications. Gabriel not only returns with a national title in the crosshairs for the Ducks, but he’s got a number of national passing records he can break this season, too. His college career has already been remarkable, he’ll only add to that legacy this fall.

At wide receiver, Oregon returns Tez Johnson, yet another member of their roster that earned All-American honors in the preseason. He is electrifying once the football touches his hands. Johnson has hauled in over 700 receiving yards in each of the past three seasons for the Ducks, including a breakout season in 2023. The Alabama native hauled in 86 catches for 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns last year, cementing his place as one of the nation’s top wideouts. Johnson is one of many reasons the Ducks are expected to have a legitimate shot at the national title this fall.

Oregon went out and landed receiver Evan Stewart out of the transfer portal this offseason. He’s hauled in over 500 receiving yards in the past two seasons. Is he capable of a breakout season this fall in Eugene? That’s what we’ll get to find out. Stewart was ranked a five-star+ prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2022 cycle and many are curious to see if he can fulfill his vast potential in Eugene. He was tabbed as one of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft by The Athletic. His development will be exciting to watch.

In case the other weapons weren’t enough, Oregon also features one of the more gifted all-purpose backs in their backfield. Running back Jordan James returns for the Ducks’ high-flying attack. He had over 800 all-purpose yards last year and 12 total touchdowns. He figures to be a great asset in the offense to keep pressure off Gabriel and their plethora of receivers.

That’s just scratching the surface for the Ducks. They’re loaded with weapons on both sides of the football. There are numerous reasons why they’re picked to be one of the top contenders for the national crown this fall.

The Idaho Vandals actually return a surprisingly stout defense that’s expected to be one of the best in the nation in FCS. Their defensive line returns eight players with 100 snaps or more, including freshman All-American Dallas Afalava. They went 9-4 last season, including a 6-2 overall record in the Big Sky Conference. While the 2023 season ended in disappointment for the Vandals, losing in the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs 30-22 to Albany, there are plenty of bright spots for the program under their head coach Jason Eck.

They have plenty of questions to answer coming into the 2024 campaign, including how quarterback Jack Layne will perform. They’ll also need to figure out who is going to replace Hayden Hatten at receiver. He was one of the best receivers in school history, hauling in over 1,200 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons for the Vandals. He’s off to the NFL. So, a new face will have to emerge this fall.

And Idaho will hope their offensive line takes a big step forward in 2024, especially for a game like a showdown with Oregon, where they’ll desperately need it. The Vandals’ offensive line unit ranked near the bottom of the FCS in pressure allowed in 2023.
