Packers GM Brian Gutekunst reacts to Jordan Love's preseason
Jordan Love just completed his first preseason as the Packers QB1, and general manager Brian Gutekunst has plenty of thoughts.
Love didn’t get the lion’s share of snaps in the opener, throwing just 10 total passes, of which he completed seven for 46 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals. He kept his total under 10 for the second game with five completions on eight passes for 84 yards and another TD.
In the final game, Green Bay still rotated through their quarterbacks, but Love got the majority of the pass attempts against Seattle — nine completions on 15 throws for 63 yards and a touchdown. All in all, that’s 193 yards and three touchdowns on 33 total throws.
A good job getting into the end zone and taking care of the ball, but there’s still vast room for improvement, per Gutekunst.
“There’s things that not everybody sees but little mistakes that I think he’s going to really grow from,” Gutekunst said in his press conference. “And then there’s things that maybe didn’t affect the play.”
The general manager is always going to have a close eye on those mistakes, but he did say Love showed plenty of promise.
“And there’s successes that he had, too, that gives him confidence to move forward. So, I think it was just really, really good.”

With an established veteran under center for so long in Aaron Rodgers, the Packers would rarely trot their starting QB or other key offensive pieces out on the field for the preseason. But with Jordan Love taking over, the experience in August was a plus.
“When you put those guys out there, sometimes you’re a little bit — we haven’t done that a lot around here,” admitted Gutekunst in regards to playing starters. He’s just happy the decision paid off and the team didn’t suffer major injuries.
“But I think it was such an important thing to get out of it clean where he played really well, I think that was a real benefit to our offense. So, I’m excited about it.”
The Packer GM is still unsure if he knows what he has at quarterback, but admitted the opportunity to knock the live-action rust off is good for the development of the offense.
“I don’t know if I really learned a ton. I think it was just really good for him and our offense.”
Jordan Love is still an unknown as a long-term starting quarterback, but at least he’s been primed for the regular season.
