The Green Bay Packers officially announced on Wednesday morning that they will play the 2024 season-opener against the Eagles in Brazil. Green Bay has expected to face Philadelphia for weeks following the league’s announcement about the big international game in the opening weekend. It is just the team’s second international regular-season appearance, following the Packers game in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The game will also mark the first time the Packers have opened the season against the Eagles since 2010.

“We’re looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “We’re excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we’re proud to be part of the league’s continued global growth.”

“As global growth continues to be a critical and strategic priority for the NFL and its 32 clubs, we are thrilled to have the Green Bay Packers playing against the Philadelphia Eagles in our first-ever game in South America,” said Gerrit Meier, NFL managing director and head of international. “With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in São Paulo will bring an incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally.”

In February, the NFL announced the Eagles will play in the league’s first-ever game in South America. The game will take place in São Paulo at the Corinthians Arena on Sept. 6. It will be the first time the NFL has played a game on Friday night in its opening weekend in more than 50 years.

International games uncommon for Packers

The Packers played in the first international game in 2022 when they took on the New York Giants in London. The team hasn’t played in too many international games due to opponents’ reluctance to relinquish a home game. At the same time, the Packers don’t want to give up a game at Lambeau Field to play overseas.

The NFL announced recently that Peacock (NBCUniversal) has secured the rights to exclusively stream the game in Brazil. It will still be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing teams.

The matchup between the Eagles and Packers will feature one of the best quarterback battles of the season. Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love, drafted in the same class in 2020, have yet to face off in their NFL careers.
