The Green Bay Packers will begin training camp without star quarterback Jordan Love. The former first-round draft pick is beginning a holdout over his contract, which is set to expire after the 2024 season. Green Bay’s front office has been working on an extension for Love, but no deal has materialized and training camp officially kicks off on Monday.

Love signed a one-year deal for the 2024 season last May for $13.5 million, but it was considered a holdover contract until a long-term solution was agreed upon. On Monday morning, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the quarterback’s absence, telling reporters he hopes his holdout will be brief.

“I think so, but, again, you never know,” Gutekunst said of signing Love to his extension soon. “We’re working really hard to get that done. I think it’s really important for us.”

Last season, Love led the Packers on a journey to clinch a playoff spot in the final weekend of the NFL regular season. They then shocked the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium before losing to the 49ers, the eventual NFC champs. Love was a star, completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns against 11 interceptions throughout the regular season.

“We both want the same thing,” Gutekunst added of Love. “We want Jordan here for a very long time.”

Love is a potential market-resetter this offseason. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence signed a five-year extension with the team that drafted him in the first round earlier this summer, matching Joe Burrow’s annual salary of $55 million. The Packers quarterback could top that soon.

Josh Jacobs believes sky is the limit for Packers with Jordan Love

Running back Josh Jacobs left a Raiders team with its unsettled quarterback situation to the Packers with Jordan Love, one of the NFL’s rising stars. He believes he made a good decision to take his talents to Green Bay. Because unlike what he experienced in Vegas, the Packers offense can be truly explosive.

“I honestly think the sky is the limit in this offense,” Jacobs said last month during an appearance on NFL Network’s The Insiders. “Obviously, with having a special guy in Jordan Love, you know, and having a good offensive line and some good receivers out there makes it a lot easier for me. But just to be able to see the game plan and things that they want me to do this year, the things that they’re allowing me to do, I just think it’s going to be a special year.”
