Pat Shurmur hilariously simplifies analysis on taking Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter in NFL Draft: 'It's not that deep'

Deion Sanders has stated two Colorado players — Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders — will be taken at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft. If you ask Buffs offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, the same is true but who exactly would be taken first? Well, according to Shurmur, depends on what position you need.

If your franchise is in search of a quarterback, he suggests Hunter. Any other answer and Shurmur suggests the two-way star hoping to produce something special in the NFL. A funny way to simplify the decision-making process for front offices.

“If you need a quarterback, draft Shedeur,” Shurmur said via Brian Howell of Buffzone. “If you don’t need a quarterback, take Travis (Hunter). As my daughter would say, it’s not that deep.”

Hunter is certainly in contention to go No. 1 overall. While the Tennessee Titans do not have a clear-cut franchise quarterback, at least from the outside, leaders have said they will not pass on a generational talent. Many believe Hunter falls into that category due to his skills at cornerback and wide receiver.

“I can do everything for real. I can do anything on the football field,” Hunter said at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. “… I’m definitely different. I’m one of a kind and I call myself a unicorn.”

Sanders being the first quarterback taken is where Shurmur’s theory may run into trouble. As of right now, Miami‘s Cam Ward is the consensus QB1 in the process. A few teams are vying to be able to take the first signal-caller off the board and Ward appears to be the prize.

In the latest mock draft from Dane Bruglar of The Athletic, he has Sanders going No. 21 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Only two quarterbacks were selected in the first round with Sanders joining Ward — who went No. 1 to the New York Giants in a mock trade.

More than a month still separates us from now and the NFL Draft in Green Bay. Teams are still in the evaluation process and figuring out what their big boards look like. Hunter is certainly up there but Sanders appears to have some room to rise.

There is no doubt in Shurmur’s mind about who he would select, though. Just look at your current quarterback situation and if things are good, take Hunter. If something new is needed inside the organization, he would go ahead and take Sanders.
