Patrick Mahomes explains what he wants his legacy to look like: 'Have no regrets'
Patrick Mahomes lives what he preaches — end every day without regret. Of course, that’s easy to say when you’re the charmed 27-year-old quarterback with two Super Bowl rings.
But there’s something to what Mahomes told Rod Maaddi in an AP Pro Football Podcast. It’s how Mahomes linked regret and legacy.
“I think everybody thinks about legacy and how they’re remembered,” Patrick Mahomes said. “But I think you have to think about that. And at the same time evaluate every day how you can become better, how you can maximize every single day, and then whenever your career’s done, you have no regrets.
“That’s what I’ve always preached,” he said. “It’s not about success of that day, it’s about having no regrets at the end of your career. I think if you work hard every single day and put everything you have into the game, when you look back at the end of your career, however many trophies you have and however many Super Bowl rings you have, you’ll have no regrets.”
Patrick Mahomes is helping publicize docuseries ‘Quarterback’
Patrick Mahomes is doing publicity this week for the Netflix premiere of the docuseries Quarterback. He and wife, Brittany, were in Los Angeles Tuesday night for the big premiere. The nine-part series focuses on the 2022 seasons enjoyed and endured by Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota.
Of course, Mahomes emerges as the winner. He not only won the Super Bowl, but Mahomes and his wife welcomed their first son, who they named Patrick III, but nicknamed Bronze. Plus, Mahomes’ new production company is involved in the project in conjunction with NFL Films. So is the one owned by Peyton Manning.
He’s been everywhere this off-season, from giving the “Riders Up” call at the Kentucky Derby to being on drivers row at the Formula One Grand Prix in Miami to attending the MetGala in NYC. Late last month, Mahomes and Travis Kelce, his favorite receiver, won Tiffany bracelets for winning The Match. It was a made-for-TV golf game in Las Vegas against NBA stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

He’ll stick around LA for tonight’s ESPYS. He’s nominated for best athlete-male for his legacy-defining season in 2022. As ESPN points out, Mahomes broke Drew Brees‘ single-season record for total yards. Brees notched 5,562 yards in 2011 with the Saints. Mahomes, meanwhile, picked up 5,614 total yards, with a career-high 5,250 of it coming from passing. He and Brees are the only two quarterbacks in NFL history to accomplish multiple seasons with at least 5,000 yards and 40 passing touchdowns.
Plus, Patrick Mahomes became only the second quarterback in two-plus decades to win both the NFL regular season MVP, then do the same for the Super Bowl. Kurt Warner was the last to do so, with his double trophies coming in 1999.
But it’s almost time to finish up the football extracurriculars. A reporter on the red carpet asked Patrick Mahomes about training camp.
“I gotta watch my weight, dude,” Mahomes quipped. “Coach (Andy) Reid is going to have me running the first day. I’m excited for it. We’re on to the next now, be in Vegas, win the Super Bowl.”
