Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes‘ father, Patrick Sr., was arrested at the end of June for driving with an invalid license just months after nearly missing his son’s third Super Bowl victory due to a DUI arrest. The former MLB player was stopped by police in Smith County, Texas, the same county in which his DUI arrest occurred after they noticed that he ignored a traffic sign.

Mahomes received a warning about the potential traffic violation, however, driving with an invalid license resulted in his arrest around 8:30 p.m. ET on June 29. He’ll have to appear before a judge before the end of the month even as he prepares to sit for trial in his DUI felony case.

Mahomes Sr. nearly missed Super Bowl LVIII after DUI arrest

Mahomes Sr. was at risk of not being able to travel from Texas, where he was arrested, to Nevada for Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas in February. However, the details of Mahomes’ bond agreement reveal that he would be able to travel before his court date and therefore, he was in Las Vegas to watch his son beat the 49ers for a third Lombardi Trophy.

According to the conditions of Mahomes’ bail, he was not supposed to drink or partake in illegal drugs. He also had to appear at the Smith County probation office on the Monday morning after the Super Bowl to meet with an officer and receive further instructions.

Mahomes also had to have an ignition interlock device on his car that would prohibit him from driving without first passing a breathalyzer test. His bond agreement also included a requirement for random alcohol and drug testing during his bond period.

The DUI arrest in February was his third arrest for the same charge in the state of Texas, which makes it a possible felony. However, the Chiefs star’s father has actually been arrested six times for DWI, including twice in 2012, twice in 2018 and once in 2019. He previously served 40 days in county jail for one of his arrests. The maximum prison sentence for a third or more offense DWI felony is 10 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice penitentiary.

Though his son said little about his father’s arrest before the Super Bowl, he did give reporters one comment.

“It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family,” Mahomes told reporters on Super Bowl week opening night. “That’s all I have to say.”
