Heading into the Super Bowl, there are rumors that it could be the last game in the legendary career of head coach Andy Reid. However, that would be a surprise to his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

While speaking to the media ahead of the Super Bowl, Mahomes was asked about that possibility. It’s just a possibility that he discounted pretty quickly.

“I’m highly doubtful… it’d be very surprising to me,” Mahomes said.

There is certainly a chance that Andy Reid is keeping this one close and even still deciding about his future. However, it would make sense that one of the first people to know if he was going to move on from Kansas City would be his starting quarterback.

If Reid were to retire it would be a massive change for Patrick Mahomes, who has only been coached by Reid during his professional career.

For Andy Reid, it’s been an incredible career to this point. It began in 1982 when Reid was a graduate assistant at BYU. He then moved to the NFL in 1992, becoming an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers. He then became the Philadelphia Eagles head coach in 1999 and joined Kansas City in that same role in 2013.

During that time, he compiled a 258-144-1 record, and won his division 14 times while winning two Super Bowls in four previous Super Bowl appearances. This season’s game against San Francisco will be his fifth appearance in the game. It will also be his fourth Super Bowl appearance alongside Patrick Mahomes.

If Andy Reid were to move on from the game, he’d be one of several legendary coaches to move on from the game this year. Bill Belichick and the Patriots parted ways, with Belichick not getting another job. The same thing has happened with Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. Meanwhile, at the college game, Alabama head coach Nick Saban decided to retire.

As of now, the NFL coaching carousel is finished. However, Andy Reid’s retirement would restart that with a very attractive job opening.

Patrick Mahomes on Chiefs reaching Super Bowl

Once the Kansas City Chiefs made the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes shared that they still had plenty to play for.

“They brought everybody. They were gonna challenge us and the guys stepped up and made plays. God put a lot of adversity in our way this year and we accepted the challenge and we’re better for it. It’s been a heck of a year. We’re not done yet, but this is the way to get there,” Mahomes said.

“It’s been a heck of a year. We’ve been underdogs for the last few games, but we never feel like underdogs. We’ve got a lot of guys on this team that know how to win, and when playoffs came around we knew we were gonna make it happen. Now we’re in the Super Bowl and the job’s not done. We’ve got to go out there to Vegas and play a great team and see if we can go out there and get the Super Bowl.”
