Patrick Mahomes injury update: Chiefs QB expected to start vs. Texans

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who suffered an ankle injury last week, will start when the team takes on the Houston Texans on Saturday. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the news on Thursday.
Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs’ 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday. The injury happened in the second half when multiple Browns defenders hit him high and low during an incomplete pass. Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz finished the game for Mahomes and was ready to be the starter if Mahomes couldn’t go on Saturday. However, Mahomes has been listed as a full participant in practice this week.
“I wouldn’t say it’s dire that I play,” Mahomes said on Tuesday, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. “It’s not in the AFC Championship Game where we’re playing to get to the Super Bowl. We have a little bit of room to kind of spare, but at the end of the day, we’re trying to win. We’re trying to win the football game and I’m a competitor. I want to go out there and play, so I’ll push myself to get to the best place possible over these next few days and we’ll be able to make a decision then.
“I’m not going to put our team in a bad position. If I feel like I can play and go out there and win a football game, I’ll play. And if I don’t feel like that’s the best-case scenario, I’ll let guys like Carson play. He’s a guy that’s winning this league as well, so it’s just about pushing it this week, seeing where I’m at and making the best decision.”

The Chiefs are currently 13-1 and clinched the AFC West title, so it would make sense for Mahomes to not play and rest his ankle. However, the Chiefs have not clinched the No. 1 seed which carries a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
Kansas City has won the last two Super Bowls and is looking to be the first franchise in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row. While Mahomes is not having an MVP-type season, the 29-year-old has been efficient, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 3,348 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 91.0 passer rating.
