Patrick Mahomes injury update: Chiefs QB full participant in Tuesday practice amid high-ankle sprain
Patrick Mahomes was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice, according to the Chiefs’ injury report. He suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns, but the team deemed it a day-to-day issue.
Mahomes left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter after taking a hit on a fourth-down pass and limped off the field. With a shorter week this week – the Chiefs play the Houston Texans on Saturday – there was concern about whether he’d be able to play after the injury.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Chiefs didn’t think the injury was serious, though. On Tuesday, he added it was a light practice as Andy Reid is trying to keep the players as fresh as possible on a short week. Kansas City plays Houston on Saturday and have the Steelers on Christmas Day, meaning they’ll play three games over an 11-day period.
As far as what he’s hoping to see out of Mahomes during the week, Reid said the team is taking a wait-and-see approach. If he can’t go, Carson Wentz would likely get the nod.

“We’ll see how Pat does out there,” Reid said. “He’s going to go through some stuff, and we’ll see how it works out for him. And if he can’t work, then Carson will take those reps that Pat doesn’t. We have full confidence in Carson. If he has to step in and play, then I think everybody, coaches and players, have full confidence that he can go in and do a nice job.”
At the time of his departure against Cleveland, Patrick Mahomes completed 19-of-38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. It marks his second ankle injury this season after previously rolling it in Week 9. However, he did not miss any time as a result of that injury.
The Chiefs and Texans will square off Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Then, Kansas City will turn around and take on Pittsburgh on Wednesday for a Christmas matinee as part of Netflix’s doubleheader.
