Patrick Mahomes injury update: Chiefs QB reveals latest on ankle after OT win vs. Buccaneers
Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) quarterback Patrick Mahomes provided an update on the severity of his ankle injury following Monday’s 30-24 Week 9 home win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5).
Mahomes said he rolled his ankle at the beginning of the fourth quarter, appearing to avoid a significant injury. He expects to be ready to play in this coming Sunday’s Week 10 home tilt against the Denver Broncos (5-4).
“I rolled my ankle,” Mahomes told Lisa Salters of ESPN. “I rolled it last week and when you roll it again, it never feels good. As I got some time, started feeling better. Got a short week, but we’ll rehab it and I’ll be ready to go next week.”
The injury occurred as Mahomes flipped a pass forward to running back Samaje Perine for a six-yard score to tie the game at 17 all. Mahomes limped to Tampa Bay’s sideline before several teammates carried him over to Kansas City’s sideline. He had a brief stay in the blue medical tent before returning to the game on the Chiefs’ next offensive possession.
Those in attendance at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium were obviously concerned about the three-time Super Bowl champion signal caller. That feeling of concern quickly shifted to relief when Mahomes ran back onto the field. Mahomes received a large cheer before Kansas City’s first play.

Patrick Mahomes leads Chiefs to 8th consecutive victory
Mahomes was masterful upon returning, leading the Chiefs on a 15-play, 78-yard scoring drive, capped off by a five-yard strike to newly acquired wideout DeAndre Hopkins to give Kansas City a 24-17 lead. The Buccaneers tied the game with 27 seconds remaining after quarterback Baker Mayfield found receiver Ryan Miller for a one-yard score, sending the game to overtime.
Kansas City won the coin toss and methodically marched down the field. 10 plays and 70 yards later, running back Kareem Hunt punched it in from the two-yard line to give the Chiefs their eighth consecutive victory to open the season.
“We got to running the football again,” Mahomes said of the overtime drive. “Obviously, we were doing stuff good earlier in the game, but we couldn’t finish drives. But then Kareem took it upon himself to keep running again and we were able to do what we needed. That’s a great football team.”
Mahomes finished 34-of-44 for 291 yards and three touchdowns.
