Patrick Mahomes injury update: NFL insider reveals diagnosis, return timeline despite short weeks
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a mild high-ankle sprain during the win over the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined The Pat McAfee Show Monday to give the latest on the ailing Mahomes. Carson Wentz finished the game and the Chiefs improved to 13-1 on the season.
“it’s a situation again, where that’s what they thought after the game, that it was a high ankle, they were coming back to Kansas City,” Schefter said. “He was undergoing additional testing today, and let’s just assume that it does show your garden variety high ankle sprain, which isn’t exactly garden variety anyway, but if it is indeed that he’s played through that injury before.
“He’s been out there, that guy is exceedingly tough and finds a way to get on the football field. The problem that they have now is they [play] Saturday, then Christmas Wednesday. The schedule is not working to his favor, but he’s got a history of playing with this injury. We’ll see if he can make it through it this time, again, and I just think he’s so tough. He usually finds a way to get through these things, but we’ll see what the testing this afternoon, shows and if he can make it back on Saturday or not.”
Mahomes was hit high and low and appeared to be sandwiched between defenders. He was later seen getting tape on his left ankle on the sideline prior to the next drive.

Before exiting with an injury, he had 159 yards, two touchdowns and a 50% completion percentage against Cleveland. Coming into the game, Mahomes had 3,189 yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
This isn’t the first time Mahomes was hurt this season. He had an additional ankle injury back in November.
“I rolled my ankle,” Mahomes told Lisa Salters of ESPN earlier this year. “I rolled it last week and when you roll it again, it never feels good. As I got some time, started feeling better. Got a short week, but we’ll rehab it and I’ll be ready to go next week.”
Mahomes could return Saturday when the Chiefs take on the Houston Texans at 1:00 p.m. ET in Kansas City.
