Patrick Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl and NFL MVP, never has played at Lambeau Field. He was on the sidelines the only other time the Chiefs have played in Green Bay. Besides, it was preseason.

So this Sunday marks a special occasion as Mahomes checks out the stadium named for a coach with six NFL championships (Curly Lambeau) and sporting the address (Vince Lombardi Avenue) featuring the name of a pro football icon. The place is steeped in football history, so it’s appropriate that Mahomes finally makes his own playing memories there.

“I’m extremely excited for it,” Mahomes told reporters at his weekly press conference. “I’ve watched it my whole entire life. And I know it’s going to be a hostile environment; the fans are going to be loud, it’s going to be a lot like Arrowhead (Stadium) is to other teams like you’re saying.

“I’m excited, if you love football, you love Lambeau Field. I’m excited to get the opportunity to play there.”

Patrick Mahomes says Jordan Love gets ‘better and better’

Will Patrick Mahomes do a Lambeau Leap? That remains to be seen. But it’s a guarantee that it’ll be loud and probably hostile to the Chiefs. Packer fans are feeling spicy as their favorite team is showing signs of life. Green Bay handled the Lions in Detroit on Thanksgiving and the Packers beat the Chargers the week before.

Jordan Love finally seems comfortable at quarterback. He’s thrown five touchdown passes with no interceptions in the past two games.

Plus, the Chiefs are showing some vulnerability. They had to rally to beat the Raiders last Sunday. The week before, they lost in the rain to the Eagles on Monday Night Football. And the Broncos thumped them in late October.

Mahomes said he flipped on part of the Packers Thanksgiving game. Count him as impressed.

“Jordan has gotten better and better every single game,” Mahomes said. “He’s always had the talent, but when you get more and more reps — I mean he didn’t play for three years basically — so he’s gotten more and more reps, you can see how much more comfortable he’s getting.

“They have playmakers everywhere, and their defense can play,” Mahomes said. “It will be a great challenge for us, and they’re a hot football team that just beat another great football team so they have confidence coming in. We’ve got to match that confidence and try to find a way to win a football game.”

The teams play on Sunday Night Football. So the atmosphere will be festive at Lambeau, especially if the Packers defense can handle Patrick Mahomes.
