LOOK: Patrick Mahomes and Myles Garrett joke about Paolo Banchero confusion
After a moment at Sunday’s F1 race where Duke‘s Paolo Banchero was mistaken for Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs star laughed at the mistake. Banchero was interviewed on the track itself by Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle after Brundle twice failed to get his attention by calling him “Patrick.”
When Banchero realized he was being interviewed, he answered Brundle’s question about how it felt to be at the track, and the reporter awkwardly realized during the answer that he was not speaking with who he thought he was — Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes himself commented on the funny situation with good humor, responding to a post made by Banchero on Twitter.
Patrick Mahomes on being confused with Paolo Banchero
Banchero handled the awkward moment in great fashion, laughing after Brundle asked him for his name mid-interview and admitted that he had the wrong person. Banchero laughed and shook his hand, later joking on Twitter that he was just having a good time. Mahomes chimed in with his own laugh at the mistake, saying there “ain’t no way” the two got confused like that.
While it may be easy enough to excuse Brundle for not knowing stars from another world of sports than F1, the largest difference between the Super Bowl winner and Duke star forward might be the largeness of Banchero — as he is listed as 6’10” to Mahomes’ 6’3″.

Even an AFC rival of Mahomes got in on the fun, as Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett commented on the confusion as well. Garrett has spent part of his NFL career trying to find Mahomes in the backfield, so he would know how to pick the quarterback out of a crowd.
Ultimately, the awkward moment led to a fun moment for both players and opens up a future full of people joking about Patrick Mahomes and Paolo Banchero being interchangeable. For now, Brundle will just have to make sure he confirms who his interviewee is before jumping into the questions. As the NBA Draft approaches — taking place June 23 — Banchero will be happy to hear his own name called on the stage instead of “Patrick.”
